Chandigarh: The Punjab Cabinet has officially approved an enhanced compensation package for farmers affected by recent natural calamities, raising the relief amount to Rs 20,000 per acre for crop loss. This decision aims to provide substantial financial support to those impacted by severe floods across the state. An official spokesperson confirmed that the revised compensation rates, approved ex-post facto, will be funded from the state budget to cover crop losses and house damages. Under the new relief framework, farmers experiencing crop loss between 26% and 75% will receive Rs 10,000 per acre, while those with losses ranging from 76% to 100% are entitled to Rs 20,000 per acre. Additionally, compensation for partially damaged houses has been increased to Rs 40,000 per unit, a significant rise from the previous amount of Rs 6,500. Since the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) allocation from the Government of India remains unchanged, the Punjab government will bear the additional compensation costs from its own treasury. This move underscores the state's commitment to supporting its agricultural community and residents in recovering from the recent flood devastation.
