Kozhikode, a city known for its vibrant culture and sports achievements, recently celebrated a significant milestone as Kerala's Education Minister V Sivankutty announced a new house for Devananda, the gold medalist of the 200-meter race at the State school athletics meet. Devananda not only excelled in this event but also set a meet record, showcasing her remarkable talent and determination. Her previous day's victory in the 100-meter race further solidified her status as a rising star in athletics.

Amidst the joy, Devananda's mother, Vijitha, expressed her immense happiness at the unexpected turn of events. “I didn’t even think my daughter would compete in the sports meet. But she participated and went on to set a record,” she shared, highlighting the family's humble beginnings and their struggle. The announcement of a new home by the minister added to their joy, marking a promising future for Devananda and her family.

In a gesture of recognition, a dinner reception was organized for Devananda and her coach, M S Ananthu, at Minister Sivankutty's residence as part of the Malayala Manorama's 'Dinner with Winner' initiative. During this event, coach Ananthu discussed Devananda's health challenges and the deteriorating condition of their current home, further emphasizing the need for support. Devananda, who recently faced health issues that required emergency surgery, demonstrated her commitment to sports by postponing her medical procedure to compete in the athletics meet.

Devananda's family lives in a dilapidated tiled house in Mammadakkulam, which is on the verge of collapse. The home is covered with sheets to prevent leakage, reflecting the family's financial struggles. Vijitha, who accompanies Devananda in Thiruvananthapuram, revealed that the minister was well aware of their living conditions when he made the decision to assist them.

The minister's commitment followed an inquiry into the family's land ownership, which revealed that they possess nine and a half cents of land but lack the funds to construct a new home. In response, Minister Sivankutty instructed the Kerala Scout and Guides to take on the responsibility of building a house for Devananda, ensuring that her achievements in sports will be matched by a stable and secure home environment.
