Madras HC Allows TN Govt to Proceed with Projects on Recovered Land

The Madras High Court has granted permission to the Tamil Nadu Government to undertake the strengthening and improvement of ponds and other public-related projects on the 160.86 acres of land recovered from the Madras Race Club (MRC) in Guindy, Chennai. Following a legal battle, the State government now has full control over the entire land. The decision was made by a Division Bench consisting of Mr. Justice SM Subramaniam and Mr. Justice Mohammed Shafiq after listening to arguments presented by Senior Counsel and Rajya Sabha Member P Wilson, supported by D Ravichandran SGP representing the State Government. The recovered land, valued at Rs 6,500 crores, was taken back from the MRC on September 9, 2024, upon the termination of a lease deed dating back to pre-independence. The MRC had challenged the termination and repossession in court, resulting in an ongoing legal process. With possession of the land now restored, a significant portion has been allocated to the Horticulture Department for the Eco Park project, aimed at flood mitigation and environmental conservation. The government's efforts to proceed with crucial infrastructure projects have been hindered by the court's interim orders, posing risks during the monsoon season.
